Welcome to our hobby site. Created over the last 8 years, we have over 600 articles from numerous contributors and many useful resources for the hobbyist interested in keeping chickens, ducks, geese, quail, Guinea fowl or turkeys. Whether you are a beginner or have been keeping backyard chickens all of your life, I hope you will find something of interest here!
After our fair share of snow and cold weather this winter and spring, we’ve finally turned a corner! As I write this in May, my first hatch is under way (much later than planned) and the runs are starting to dry out. Having moved to Herefordshire, I underestimated the time I would need to give to getting set up again so I didn’t hatch anything last year so it’s going to be very special for me (and my children) this year.
The website had to take a back seat for a while with everything that has been going on surrounding our house move (DIY SOS). We’ve recently updated and re-organised our Forum (with a lot of help from our long-term moderator ‘Marigold’ who deserves a medal). I urge you to take a peep sometime. Marigold has gone through 9 years of posts and organised them into sub-categories and removed any out of date information, leaving the gems of wisdom for you.Coming up!
This year I’m planning a new duck pond so watch out for the inevitable ‘how to’ articles. I’m also going to buy a cheap garden shed and convert that into a chicken house. I’m researching both of these at the moment and have some trips to view other people’s handy work coming up so expect to be able to show off the results this summer… watch… this… space!Spring

Contrary to popular belief, domestic ducks and geese do not need a pond (they only spend 10% of their time on water) so a plastic tub refilled daily is sufficient for them to be content.
Geese are useful for keeping grass short and alerting you to unwanted visitors but ducks really are the ultimate environmental slug control on any vegetable patch!

Domestic poultry breeds come from a standard that tell us how a breed should look. In the UK we have the British Poultry Standards and the British Waterfowl Standards. There are other standards around the World though – the European Standard, American Standard of Perfection and Australian Poultry Standard.
